biophilia design trends

Natural elements are taking over the design world to create a raw connection with our native roots.

In 1964, Erich Fromm introduced the idea of our subconscious seeking connections with the nature for a positive perspective towards life benefiting in overall well-being. With living beyond the pandemic, designing for wellness and health has become a major factor for client lifestyles. We explore four trends that have shifted the focus to welcoming biophilia into the home, inside and out.

Organic Elements

Bringing the outdoors in has been a dominating design trend for the past few years. A simple solution to achieve this is through plants! Incorporate decorative planters throughout your bathroom or display your mini herb garden on your kitchen countertops. For a literal indoor/outdoor translation, many homeowners are extending the bathroom shower to include their outdoor patio areas. If your home lacks outdoor space, you can always create the illusion with expansive windows!

Biophilic Bathroom

Additional biophilia features for the bathroom include green walls, natural representations in tile, wallpaper, art, and lighting. Warm wood veneers or cabinetry stain colors provides a peaceful, earthy appeal. Water fixtures can transcend an organic approach by ceiling-mounted shower rain heads and multifunctional pressure settings.

Increase in Outdoor Living
Entertaining and relaxing in an outdoor environment is a high priority for post-pandemic living. Many builders and homeowners are seeking to maximize any outdoor space they have to continue emphasizing the value of being one with nature. A strong interest for fitness and/or outdoor hobbies is here to stay as seen with the population's focus on health.

Down to Earth

Cabinetry trends are leaning towards natural stains or raw wood tones to incorporate an unrefined design look. Some kitchens will include a plant insert directly in the cabinet or wall to promote home-grown produce or sustainable living. Having plants in these common areas, such as the kitchen or bathroom, evokes an earthy and welcoming feeling for guests. Tile, finishes, faucets, lighting, and even fabrics can have a nature-inspired design or pattern.

Hybrid Living

The line between indoor and outdoor is blurring, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Many people want to feel connected with the outside and enjoy the natural views with privacy. Investing in sliding doors that extend wall to wall for a fluid indoor/outdoor concept benefits the whole family. Entertain, enlarge your space, and experience the beauty of nature.
